Zephaniah 1 Judgment on Judah

Read Zephaniah 1

To get an idea of the time and events you need to go back to 2 Kings 20-22. Hezekiah was a good king by most standards. He had ups and downs and tried to walk upright. When he died his son Manasseh however was evil incarnate. It is said that he did more evil than the Amorites, he placed idols and phallic symbols in the temple of God. His son Amon was no better. The people realized that he was evil and killed him (Amon) to place his son Josiah on the throne. Josiah was 8 when he became king.

So knowing the event in Kings and Chronicles, this prophecy took place between the first and 18th year of Josiah's reign. The people of Judah are doing everything that God said not to do and so far will not listen to His prophets. So God pronounces a judgment on the leadership and the people for their sins.
