Read 1 Samuel 15
I like the conversation at verses 13 and 14, Saul claims to have done what God, through Samuel, told him to do. If that were true there would be no live animals. I don't know why God said to destroy everything, I have ideas but the scripture doesn't explain it. The fact is that God said to do it and Saul didn't. The principle of obedience though is a recurring theme. It's not the offering, nor the ritual. It's the attitude toward God, doing what we're told simply because God said to do it.
