Exodus 30 Providing for the priests

Read Exodus 30

At verse 11 God institutes the census or temple tax. It was to provide for the priests and temple expenses. All of the other tribes were to be laborers of sorts, primarily farming and shepherds. But the Levites were to be priests. God set up a system to provide for them, they received a potion of meat and grain from the offerings (which Ely's sons perverted), and the annual tax. The half shekel in today's moneys would be close to five dollars. With a wilderness populace of nearly two million, that's ten million dollars to pay the priests and maintain the tabernacle. A pretty good budget.
