Two thoughts on this chapter, we begin with several different battles in which it says that Israel killed everyone, including the women and children. We today would look at this as war crimes, we've set certain standards of who is or is not considered a combatant. God told Israel many times to wipe out a certain people because they were evil and if any were allowed to live they would contaminate Israel. Later in the books of Joshua, Judges and Kings we'll see how this actually happens. The second item is that Moses will not enter into Canaan. I've heard people say it was for killing the Egyptian but in Numbers 20 we saw the reason,(vs 10-13). But I wonder if not going over was such a bad thing for Moses. God took him up to the mountain top to look at the land. Moses is now 120 years old, he's spent the last 40 years walking around in circles, he's watched all of his old friends die. Perhaps Moses actually welcomed God taking him home instead of crossing over.
