January 12, Deuteronomy 14

January 12, Deuteronomy 14

Here is God's original purpose of the tithe. We know that Abraham gave a tithe to Melchizedek and set an example of piety.  But here God specifically explains what to do with th e tithe.  It's to be brought at one time to a specific place for a grand festival.  A community stockpile for everyone to come and partake.  In the original design what was brought to the temple or synagogue were offerings for sins, of which a portion  was set aside for the priests.  This was how the “church” of  the time operated, the tithe was a separate issue.  The concept has changed over time.  Are we compelled to tithe today?  No, there is no specific amount that a Christian is scripturally required to bring to God.  Another facet that should set apart Christians from religions is not giving from a compulsory requirement but giving from love.
