January 13, Deuteronomy 15

January 13, Deuteronomy 15

God sets provisions for the land to recover and for a person to be indentured should they become poor.  The idea being they work for their brother, (this was only within the tribes of Israel), until the sabbatical year then be let lose with provisions to begin again.  For a land owner to receive someone in the first year would be a profit but in the sixth would be a loss.  God says not to consider the year, simply to give as He gives and He shall take care of the rest.  Israel kept the Sabbaths initially, it's not clear for how long.  There are no records of ever having a Jubilee year so I suppose for less than 50 years. The books of Jeremiah and Daniel refer to the Babylonian captivity to allow the land to receive her Sabbaths that Israel did not recognize.  One other item of note, verse 11, Jesus said this also. For there will never cease to be poor in the land. Therefore I command you, ‘You shall open wide your hand to your brother, to the needy and to the poor, in your land.’
