It's hard for a parent that walks with God to have children that do not, such a situation can cause feelings of failure. We know little about Samuel's relationship with his sons, perhaps he is part to blame and perhaps not. Scripture clearly teaches though that each person is individually responsible. Now about wanting a king. God told them back in Deuteronomy that one day they'd ask for a king and He' d give them one. It was also prophesied what to expect from a king. There are several items in this king idea that are wrong in no particular order. They wanted a king to be like other nations. Israel was never to be like other nations, they were and always will be God's chosen people. They brought the request to Samuel instead of to God, the text states they asked Samuel to appoint a king, not that they asked him to ask God. I think it shows that at this point in their history they're trusting man and not God.
