March 19, 1 Samuel 17:19-37

March 19, 1 Samuel 17:19-37

The story of David and Goliath is told so often and with so many variations, used as a metaphor for some life occurrence. When we see David arrive the armies are assembled and facing each other across the valley. To a casual observer we would see a young boy running up to the army, one could easily make the assumption that he was simply excited to see soldiers getting ready for a battle.

Different writings place David at ages from 12 to 22, so I split the difference and take 16. Certainly this would be a young man, easily excited by the prospect of seeing a battle, yet a man who spends time daily with God and has such faith as to know that He will protect His people. Having that same faith, he delivers a chastisement to the men in Israel's army, asking them who is this uncircumcised Philistine to defy the armies of God? Something happens to us as we age, we become more cynical and trust or doubt based our own ability.
