March 2, 1 Samuel 11:8-15
I'm backing up a bit because I want to look at the battle. We have some intrigue and deceit on behalf of the people in Jabesh-gilead, but this is war and there are no rules to be fair with enemies.
The distance from Bezek to Jabesh -gilead is about 20 miles so it's feasible that Saul gathered his army and the Amonites never knew they were there, which is a pretty good military tactic. It would take 4 to 6 hours for an army to cover 20 miles, so a night march, when the enemy is sleeping would bring them to the camp at first light. Again good military tactics. And with this victory the people accept Saul as their king.
