March 29, 1 Samuel 18:17-30
You really need to read this several times and do some thinking to get an idea of what's going on.
Saul plans to get rid of David by sending him to fight the Philistines, seems a familiar tactic, something that David himself uses later. I wonder how many rulers have removed potential rivals by sending them to die in battle? Then there is the issue of Saul's daughters. Saul made a promise that whoever fought and defeated Goliath would marry Saul's daughter. Merab was the eldest and the most likely candidate. Interesting that we don't know what she wanted in this. Then verse 19 shows up and we have no explanation. Perhaps David was long fighting the Philistines and presumed dead. There's simply not enough information given to know why. Then the promise of the second daughter, I get the feeling that this was a troublesome teen and Saul really wanted to be rid of her. Again trying to kill off David by requiring 100 foreskins. Really? Very gross. I just can't imagine cutting them off and carrying them around but people do strange things.
