April 14, 1 Samuel 25:14-22
There are two specific items in this section to look at, first being Abigail. Although not specifically stated I get the idea that the marriage was not good. I also see that Abigail is a woman of wisdom. Being a very cynical person I always try to find the reason someone does what they do. Abigail is married to a wealthy man, should that man die what happens to the estate? If he has a brother or son it goes to them, in either case Abigail could lose out. I also wonder how many people of Israel knew that Samuel had anointed David to be the next king. So maybe Abigail is trying to protect Nabal, maybe she’s looking after her interests and maybe she’s putting her sights on David. Perhaps a combination of all three. Now to look at David. What he plans to do is wrong no matter how you look at it. While it would be proper for Nabal to give a payment to David there is no contract and it’s still Nabal’s property. This action is motivated purely because Nabal made David angry. Anger and rage are carnal emotions that we all need to deal with, nearly every day someone is killed simply someone became angry.
