June 12, II Samuel 24:1-9
This chapter has a parallel in 1 Chronicles 21 and they appear to disagree on a key point. Here it says that the anger of The Lord was kindled against Israel and in Chronicles it says that Satan rose up against Israel, so which is correct and do they contradict? Well they are both correct and neither contradict, it deals primarily in the poor English translations. Satan did incite David to number Israel, or perhaps it was simply his own waning trust in God. And as a result of that God was angry. One may ask why this was a problem? David began to look at his problems the way most of us look at them, do I have the resources to fix what's broke? To overcome this obstacle? To defeat this enemy? For Israel the only resource they needed was God. God made a promise directly to Israel, as long as they kept His commandments He would be their God and He would take care of them. For David to number the people it showed a lack of that trust. We've seen before how Joab was a close advisor to David and reproved him when he was wrong, we all need someone to do this in our lives, unfortunately David doesn't take the advise.
