June 15, Joel 1:1-12

June 15, Joel 1:1-12

The book of Joel was probably written between the time that Israel, the northern kingdom, and Judah the southern were captured.  Much of this is literal and much is figurative.  There were in fact locusts that destroyed crops but the locusts could also be social issues.  He says to the elders, have you ever seen things so bad?  That question can be asked today, the world certainly is different.  Violence, drugs, immorality, anger and hatred is destroying us and we focus on the wrong solutions.  In this text he says a nation has come up against my land, perhaps not a foreign power but a different people, the pagans have united against God's people and God's people have done little to stop them. A nation that was once prosperous is struggling to survive.
