August 12, I Kings 18:41-46
Elijah dismisses Ahab, think about this a moment, Ahab is the king. What’s going through Ahab’s mind right now? He’s been an idolater, worshiping Baal yet for God’s purpose he’s been spared. Elijah shows him no specific respect, simply tells him to go, it’s about to rain. Now Elijah is on the mountain praying, God said that when Elijah speaks it He will send rain but not yet. I don’t know if there’s any connection to the seven times his servant looked, maybe God just wanted Elijah to wait a little longer but yes rain is coming. Imagine if you’re Ahab and it hasn’t rained in three years, what do you expect? How do you feel that this prophet is forecasting rain? Now let’s go down off the mountain, the neighboring villages have suffered in this drought. Just as Elijah’s servant sees the small cloud so do people living in the area. There are people of all ages doing daily chores when someone speaks up, ‘I see a cloud’. Some may have given up on ever seeing rain again but now hope rises. Maybe today, maybe this is the day it will rain again and bring back life. Ever been there? It’s so dry and barren, sometimes it looks like a possible cloud is coming but it just breaks up and gets even drier. But this day is different. God has promised and Elijah has said the rain is coming. The sky grows darker, the people in the villages rejoice, rain is indeed coming. Back on the mountain Ahab is told to go quickly or get caught in the flood and as he rides his chariot God reaches down to bring Elijah there before him.
