August 8, I Kings 18:20-22

August 8, I Kings 18:20-22

This story of Elijah and the prophets of Baal is one of the most famous about Elijah.  Yet there is so much here that I’ll take at least three days looking at this.  In the last chapter Elijah says to gather the 450 prophets of Baal and the 400 prophets of Asherah along with all of Israel.
All of Israel would probably mean representatives from each tribe.  But what we see here are the prophets of Baal, none of Asherah and an unknown number of Israel.  The choice of Mt Carmel is significant in that at one time there were temples both to God and to Baal but Jezebel tore down the temple of God.  So Elijah is giving them the home field advantage.
One more item for today, Elijah asks the people how long they will limp between two opinions.  The image in this translation is of a bird hopping from branch to branch one leg at a time.  Israel was in a pickle, they knew what The Law said, but they feared the government so they would compromise from fear of Ahab.  Does this sound familiar?  Stop hopping from branch to branch and choose where you will stand.

Today's workout, back biceps intervals.
Step up, pull up, burpee, biceps curl, jump rope, row, windmill, T.
