As we finish this chapter I encourage the reader to also read 2 Chronicles 24, both contain different aspects of the same story. Joash was foolish in a lot of ways, he forsook the way in which he was raised and followed people of the world. He tried to negotiate peace with a bribe, but that will never work, bullies always come back for more unless they're dealt with. That's a lesson that governments still haven't learned today. The army returned a year later and as Joash had no money to give for tribute, they waged war against an unprepared Judah. It wasn't much of a war, and most of Jerusalem was in ruins. Also during that year of peace, Zechariah the son of Jehoiada prophecied and Joash had him stoned, not a good idea to kill God's prophet. His own servants executed him in the end.
