October 16, II Kings 20:12-21 Be wary of gifts and flattery

Hezekiah receives letters and gifts from Babylon and exactly what they wanted to happen did. He trusted the envoys as his friends. Flattery is a common means used to gain someone's trust. Hezekiah should not have showed everything to these men, they now knew the layout of Jerusalem, all of it's wealth and armament. But Hezekiah's attitude changes, he knows how long he will live and with Isaiah's prophecy also knows there will be peace in his lifetime. He's no longer so concerned with the nation as long as he sees peace. That's pretty sad, he knows that some of his own sons will be slaves in Babylon yet we're not told that he did anything to change.
