It says that Amaziah of Judah was a good king but he too didn't stop the idolatry outside of Jerusalem. He becomes so sure of himself after some military successes that he declares war on Israel. Foolish on several levels, Joash of Israel was well known for his military might, Amaziah was not a good leader, he was simply blessed by God in his endeavors, and one must remember that God himself split the kingdom. There is a common principle that when people are prosperous or successful they tend to believe they've done it themselves, the phrase of "self made man" and no longer look to God. I can't be sure but I suspect Amaziah had this pride problem. In this case his pride lead to the defeat and destruction of a large part of Jerusalem.
