January 14, Ezra 3:8-13 A groundbreaking celebration
After two years they are finally able to start rebuilding the temple. For most of us the temple simply represents a religious building but for Israel it represented God with them, it was central to their culture. I've been to groundbreakings where it's simply a few shovel fulls of dirt and I've been to ones where there's heavy equipment moving lots of dirt. I was at one where there was a big party with a band on a flatbed trailer and a large celebration. That's what I picture here, it's a celebration that God has returned to His people and the people to God. It's a time of great hope and expectations, for some they remember what things were like before Israel fell and for others they look forward to greatness.
