I think sometimes Peter gets a bum rap here. I know some self righteous people who claim that they've never denied Jesus but in reality we all have at some point. Not necessarily a flat out denial but sometimes when we should have spoken up for righteousness we've been silent. In Peter's defense he did not yet have the Holy Spirit and trying to do these things on his own strength just wasn't going to happen. We look finally in this chapter at the trial behind closed doors. What began in the dark of night continues in secret. The trial was just a formality, they were not concerned with questions or answers. Jesus said to them in so many words that it would not matter what He said, they would not change their minds or release Him. This is truly denying Christ, in spite of evidence people still today will deny Christ so they can claim to control their own lives.
