That line comes from verse 7, and ever since Christ came there have been preachers saying this. The fact is that we don't know when the end is and it could be today, just be ready. A few thoughts on this, the first verse gives the impression that through suffering in the flesh one will no longer sin. The idea is that one would learn from errors and no do the same thing again. Wish that were true, yet there is some truth to this. Many of the foolish things I used to do I no longer do. Also note the behavior of the pagans, or as Peter calls them the gentiles. "Living in sensuality, passions, drunkenness, orgies, drinking parties, and lawless idolatry". That sounds like today. The fact is that the behavior of man has not and will not change without God. Looking at our current societal acceptance of sexual practices, things that were considered immoral 30 years ago are today the norm. Without God it will continue to decay.
