There's really a very basic principle here, if you live in excess today, eventually it will run out and you'll be broke. I'm not sure where I heard it but someone said live today like you want to live tomorrow. It can be interpreted in different ways, keep enough so you can survive another day, or long term planning for what you have when you are no longer to make an income. That's a major problem today, we live in a society of excesses with little thought for next year or the net ten years. Most of the finery mentioned in the reading dealt with prostitution and cult practices, today it's more a status position. The cost of designer clothes vs off the rack. If someone can truly afford the designer then it's their money to spend but so many simply want to impress.
