April 23, Isaiah 40. Comfort, sorrow, and God's greatness
We see a familiar quote in the first part, prepare the way of the lord. It was John the baptist who said this about Jesus. The people of that time understood the meaning from this prophecy, a promise to restore Israel but it was even more. The low will be lifted and the high and proud brought down. There is sorrow as we look on the human condition, living for only a short time, compared to the grass and flowers. Then we look on God, consider the dust of the earth, the stars in the sky, the waters in the oceans. It is God who created them and one day He will call His own as a shepherd calls his sheep. In this life we will know sorrow, but to know Him has a promise that this life is not all there is.
