I read a series of fiction/fantasy novels years ago by Robert Asprin where there were characters known as deveels. They were know to be cheats and a common expression was when you make a deal with a deveel first count your fingers, then your toes, then your relatives. The people in their idolatry made deals with demons concerning death and hell. The problem though is that God makes those decisions. They traded their eternal life for immediate worldly pleasures. That is still another aspect of humanity that hasn't changed, seeking immediate pleasures regardless of the final cost.
