July 10 Luke 13:1-5 Should punishment fit the crime?

I can't remember how many times I've heard such statements, that someone who made others suffer should also suffer. That's not justice, it's vengeance and that belongs explicitly to God. Evil exists in the world and we live in a broken system. Sometimes we suffer from our own sins and sometimes from others'. The degree of suffering though most times has nothing to do with our own sins. Jesus is addressing two instances where people felt that others were punished for sins. Much like the foolishness I've heard after hurricanes strike the tropical islands, or when Katrina struck Louisiana. No, natural disasters are not God punishing people, they are the results of the world being broken, it's that simple.
