August 26 Genesis 21:1-21 Isaac and Ishmael

The birth of Isaac to Sarah and Abraham brought laughter and that's what she names him, but not all is joy in the household. Another great argument here why a marriage should only be one man and one woman. Even partnerships, whenever possible should be limited. It's hard enough getting two to agree on things. No-one knows what Ishmael did to upset Sarah thought there are a lot of theories. But God told Abraham to send them on and He would bless Ishmael because he was Abraham's son. It seems cruel how they were sent out, the text gives an image of a mother with a loaf of bread, a skin of water and a small child. But Ishmael was sixteen to eighteen years old, an adult in that culture. And the word bread can mean food provisions in general. The text would mean that Abraham gave them enough to travel to any near town or village but Hagar and Ishmael got lost.
